It seems obvious that members of Congress shouldn’t be buying and selling stocks while in office – especially when they have access to insider knowledge and classified information.
The Ban Congressional Stock Trading Act would end insider trading by members of Congress, helping to ensure that they’re making decisions that serve the people, not their own financial interests.
Currently, members of Congress have to report stock trades under the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act (STOCK ACT).
But Business Insider reports that at least 55 members of Congress violated the STOCK Act in 2021 alone. The same investigation also found that Congress does not adequately enforce transparency and accountability measures.
Members of Congress have access to privileged information that the American people simply do not. They should not be able to benefit financially due to their position.
Thanks for signing on.
