Hey John, Tara here from the NDRC! This is a bit of a longer email, so if you’re short on time and you already know how important it is to finish redistricting strong, you can pitch in to fuel our ongoing efforts to stop GOP gerrymandering at this link!
Since the latest redistricting process began, the fair maps movement has helped notch some big wins in the fight for fair maps:
- In PENNSYLVANIA, Democratic Governor Tom Wolf VETOED the GOP’s gerrymandered map, and the state Supreme Court adopted a fair version instead!
- In OHIO, Republicans have tried multiple times to pass unfair maps. But so far, the state Supreme Court has BLOCKED their attempts to gerrymander!
- In NORTH CAROLINA, the GOP-controlled legislature tried to gerrymander their way into permanent power. But the state Supreme Court STOPPED their manipulated maps!
But it’s not all good news. As President Obama said, “Republican politicians are doubling down… [and] politically gerrymandering districts in a way that drowns out the voices of ordinary people.” So unfortunately, our movement has had some setbacks as well:
- In TEXAS AND GEORGIA, Republicans passed maps that are clear attempts to dilute the voting power of non-white populations. It’s a direct assault on DEMOCRACY ITSELF — luckily, their maps are being challenged in court but we won’t have new maps before the midterms.
- In TENNESSEE, Republicans passed maps that ELIMINATE five Democratic state House incumbents and CRACK left-leaning Nashville into three congressional districts!
- In ALABAMA, a federal judge struck down the GOP’s gerrymandered maps. Later, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to take the case — but that’s also DELAYING the redrawing of the maps until after the 2022 election!
This fight isn’t over until it’s over, John, and there’s still plenty we can do. We’re working to expose Republican gerrymandering wherever it occurs and, with our affiliates, supporting plaintiffs in lawsuits against gerrymandered maps, and so much more — and we need your help to do it! The way we see it, you have two options:
- Get complacent and resign yourself to the fact that Republicans are gerrymandering themselves into enduring majorities for the next 10 years.
- Or commit to the fight for fair maps and do everything you can to stop GOP gerrymandering wherever we can!
