Let’s travel back in time for a moment.
It’s spring 2019 and the Medicare for All Act was just introduced in the Senate. Five senators running for president cosponsor the bill – Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
The proposed legislation would create a single-payer system and cover long-term care, mental health, dental, prescription drugs, and more. It would effectively end private health insurance and let patients see any doctor they want to with no deductibles or copays.
The introduction of this bill was a powerful moment that signaled growing and widespread support for Medicare for All. The bill expired, like all bills do, at the end of the Congressional term – but here’s the good news:
Our hope is that a new Medicare for All bill will be introduced in the Senate in the next few months – which means we need to mobilize now to make sure as many Democratic senators as possible are signed on to this bill.
Join your statewide committee »
As part of your statewide committee, you’ll work with other Medicare for All supporters in Pennsylvania to pressure your senator(s) to sign on to the bill. That could look like sending letters, making calls, collecting virtual petition signatures, organizing Covid-safe actions, or scheduling a virtual meeting with their office.
We don’t know the exact timing when the bill will be introduced, but we must start mobilizing now so we can exceed the number of cosponsors from 2019 and let our senators see the widespread support for Medicare for All across the country.
Thank you for signing up, and we’ll be in touch with more information soon.
