The facts are simple. Big Oil is greenwashing its public image by making promises they have no intention of keeping while producing more and more fossil fuels.

John – Congressional Democrats are holding Big Oil accountable for making climate pledges that don’t go far enough.

Board members from ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, and Shell refused to appear and testify at a recent hearing of the House Oversight Committee.

Members of Congress were planning to quiz the Big Oil representatives on their companies’ promises to reduce the carbon intensity of their fossil fuels, while still increasing production.

In their place, the committee invited scientists and experts to speak to the pledges by Big Oil. As Michael Mann, an atmospheric science professor at Pennsylvania State University put it, plans to reduce the carbon intensity but increase production was akin to “eating more potato chips but selecting a lower-fat variety.”

The scientists and environmental advocates that did testify at the hearing joined lawmakers in criticizing the companies’ promises, calling them insufficient as the companies plan to continue and expand fossil fuel production.

The facts are simple. Big Oil is greenwashing its public image by making promises they have no intention of keeping while producing more and more fossil fuels.

John, SEEC members are working to hold Big Oil and polluters accountable. But if Democrats fail to keep the majority in Congress after the midterm elections, the Republican chairs of the relevant congressional committees will give Big Oil a pass.

The climate crisis is the existential threat of our lifetime. SEEC members are working around the clock to develop and pass policies that will begin eliminating the global threat. Will you let our SEEC members know you’re standing with them by donating today?
