Friend,
I want to take a moment of your time to talk about a former colleague and a great friend who is running to be the next Governor of Maryland — John King.
I have been a supporter of John since long before he got into this race. He was my successor as Secretary of Education under President Obama, and he did an incredible job carrying out and building upon the ambitious agenda that we developed during my tenure.
Anyone who meets John can tell you that he has the heart of someone who spent their life teaching and caring for others, and the determination and grit of someone who defied all odds to get where he is today. You can see it in his work — John has seen where Black and brown students are routinely underserved, and he has made it his mission to close opportunity gaps.
I know that John will make a difference as governor — he has comprehensive, progressive plans to address the issues facing Marylanders, the experience to make his vision a reality, and the drive to get it all done. All he needs from the rest of us is the support to get him to Annapolis.
Can you pitch in to make John the next Governor of Maryland?
I once said that education can be the difference between life and death. That was certainly true for John. As you may know, he lost both parents by the age of 12 and was moved around between family members and schools. And he always says that his public school teachers are the reason he made it through and is here today. Now, he wants to make sure that every child in this state has the same opportunities and support that he did.
If you are able, please give whatever you can to help support John’s campaign.
I am proud to call John a friend — I hope that soon, I can also call him governor.
Thank you,
Arne Duncan
Former Secretary of Education
