The US Air Force has published proposed plans for flight operations that could have devastating effects on the wildlife and habitat of our region. Your immediate action is needed by March 4—this Friday!

The US Air Force seeks to allow numerous military flights at 100 feet above ground level, and regular supersonic, sonic-boom-producing training flights at 5,000 feet over southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, including the bird-rich Chiricahua Mountains. The proposal will affect rural and tribal communities, some of the Southwest’s most fragile sky-island ecosystems, as well as wilderness areas and national monuments. It will also allow the release of chaff, polluting the environment with aluminum-coated silica fibers used in evasive maneuvers and permit dropping of flares at lower altitudes, increasing the risk of wildfire in areas already vulnerable to catastrophic wildfire.

Southeast Arizona is home to some of North America’s most cherished historical and biologically diverse lands, drawing birdwatchers, researchers, and other visitors from all over the world. The quiet landscapes and homes of Elegant Trogons, Mexican Spotted Owls, and Montezuma Quail will all be affected by these proposed changes.
