When I'm talking to voters, sometimes I get asked: why do you support the Green New Deal?
My answer? To secure our future, we need massive infrastructure spending and a WWII style mobilization of our economy to meet the effects of climate change and inequality. Let me explain:
At its core, the Green New Deal seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to save our planet, but it is so much more. The Green New Deal will help fix inequality and save our communities.
The Green New Deal acknowledges the fact that many of us have been denied our human right to quality housing and guarantees to correct it.
We know that fundamentally, housing is a human right. However, high rent burdens, gentrification, and an inability to find rentals or buy homes have created enormous pressure on parts of our district. Moreover, NYCHA complexes are inadequate, leaving our neighbors to freeze without access to heat or hot water.
