“Sen. Carper pushes for increased focus on beach replenishment and coastal restoration”
- February 22, 2022
I want to thank everyone who made contributions to our grassroots organization last month.
John, President Biden gave his first State of the Union address and talked about challenges we face at home and abroad. Your support is critical to ensuring we elect leaders who are committed to working to tackle those challenges as they come.
And one of the biggest challenges we’re facing as a country and a planet is climate change.
Last week was Coastal Protection Week and I traveled around Delaware, visiting places like Slaughter Beach and Indian River Inlet, to see firsthand how climate change is threatening our state’s coastline.
We’ve already seen extreme weather events like flooding shut off access to hospitals and schools and displace Delawareans from their homes. And the NOAA projects the U.S. will see as much sea-level rise over the course of the next 30 years as it has seen over the course of the past 100 years.
We’re seeing the effects of climate change in real time. And if we let this crisis go on unaddressed, it will threaten not only our environment and wildlife but also our homes, businesses, infrastructure, tourism, and economy.
We need to make sure that 100 years from now, these places we cherish -- our beaches and our coastal communities -- will still be here.
That’s why I introduced a bill that would strengthen our storm risk-management programs and environmental restoration efforts. And with the bipartisan infrastructure bill, we’re making our infrastructure more resilient in the face of climate change.
If we’re going to protect our planet for future generations, we must take action now -- and it’s going to take all of us getting involved to continue moving the needle forward. And for that reason, John, I’m so grateful you are an active and engaged member of this grassroots community.
Thank you,
Tom
