Dear John,
This week, World BEYOND War Board Member Yurii Sheliazhenko in Kyiv, Ukraine, spoke to Democracy Now! about the unfolding crisis in Ukraine, why the world must pursue a nonviolent solution to this conflict, and how we can work towards a system of global governance based on a culture of peace. Watch the 5-minute highlights as Yurii shares his powerful first-hand perspective as a courageous conscientious objector in Ukraine.
Yurii's words are an inspiring call for collective, nonviolent action. Join World BEYOND War and our allies worldwide for the Global Day of Action this Sunday, March 6 to call for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, the abolition of NATO, and the end to sanctions that harm ordinary Russians. We call for demilitarization, de-escalation, and diplomacy. There is no military solution to this conflict; the West sending weapons to Ukraine only fans the flames of war. Visit World BEYOND War's Ukraine action page to find events, sign our petition, download shareable social media graphics, and find articles, videos, and more resources for the day of action.
At World BEYOND War, we know that this conflict is a symptom of a much larger problem — the global war machine that exists for the purpose of fueling the profits of weapons corporations that literally make a killing off of killing. As we call for an end to the war in Ukraine, we must also call for the end to bombings in Yemen, in Palestine, in Somalia, in Syria, in Afghanistan, an end to all war everywhere.
This moment is our opportunity to underscore the importance of our mission to abolish the institution of war and to highlight its multi-faceted social, environmental, and economic impacts. We know that wars kill, maim, traumatize, and displace millions of innocent civilians. That militarism is one of the biggest polluters on the planet, that nonviolent resistance is twice as successful as armed resistance, and that a dollar spent on education and health care produces more jobs than the same dollar spent in the war industry.
While the world governments and corporate media are finally paying attention to the crisis of war, let's come together in international solidarity to call for peace in Ukraine, an end to NATO, and an end to all war everywhere.
