Friend,

On Tuesday President Biden gave his first State of the Union address, and while he touched on many of the issues impacting our communities, one policy was notably absent. There wasn’t a single mention of a plan to cancel student debt.

Over the past year, he has reformed the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program -- which has already helped millions of Americans -- and extended the payment freeze through May. These are important steps, but they don’t go far enough. Today I am reiterating my call for President Biden to cancel up to $50,000 in debt for all borrowers.

Student debt disproportionately impacts young people of color and upholds generational systems of wealth and poverty. Not only would student loan forgiveness have a massive impact on working families, it would also revitalize our economy, support small businesses, and further invest in our futures. It’s time to get it done. Chip in now to show you agree.

I’m proud of the progress we’ve accomplished since President Biden took office -- including supporting working families with the expanded child tax credit through the American Rescue Plan and investing in lead-free pipes and restoring the Caño Martín Peña through the American Infrastructure and Jobs Act -- but there is still a lot of work to be done.

We must deliver on our promise and cancel student debt.

Let’s get to work,
Nydia
