Hi Revealer,

In our investigation, When Abusers Keep Their Guns, Reveal reporter Jennifer Gollan broke important new ground on a horrifying loophole: While federal law and many state statutes prohibit domestic abusers from owning firearms, these laws are enforced on an honor system that relies on people who are prohibited from possessing guns to disarm themselves. Many abusers never relinquish their weapons, and their intimate partners — and families and communities — pay the price.

I’m thrilled to share an exciting update: The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2022 aims to expand the powers of state and local prosecutors and police to pursue domestic abusers who have refused to give up their firearms. Domestic violence and gun policy experts credited our reporting with forcing senators to confront this burgeoning – but preventable – crisis. “After (Reveal’s) investigation, there was no denying it anymore,” said Marissa Edmund, senior policy analyst for gun violence prevention at the Center for American Progress. The project “100% lit a fire for members of Congress.”

We’ll keep you updated on how this investigation continues to advance our mission to change minds, lives and laws.
