** WEEKLY DIGEST
------------------------------------------------------------
The Alaska Housing Trust

We know that many of you care deeply about housing in Alaska, working day in and day out to provide support to Alaskans who need it. On a good day, working in homelessness services can feel like treading water. We also know that if we continue doing the same thing, we won’t see significant changes. Sometimes it can be difficult to step back and think about the future when there are so many immediate needs and so few resources. Going into 2022 the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness and the Alaska Coalition on Housing and Homelessness have dedicated our joint efforts to look ahead and identify structural changes that could impact housing in our state. To that end, we are working to establish the Alaska Housing Trust, a statewide trust to produce, preserve, and protect housing for all Alaskans.

Alaska is one of only three states that doesn’t have a statewide trust, and we aim to change that. Housing is a significant social determinant of health. The housing stock in Alaska is aging and there is not enough of it. We want to maximize the impact of current funding streams by providing additional resources to developers, nonprofits, housing authorities and other entities. The Alaska Housing Trust will create sustainable housing security for Alaskans.

** President Calls for Affordable Housing Investments in State of the Union Address
------------------------------------------------------------
In the first State of the Union ([link removed](NLIHC_03022022)259618becdc3f0451bd5d&id=a20e6a736f&e=3498df60f1) address of his presidency on March 1, President Biden called for increased investments in affordable housing to help counter the harmful impacts of inflation. “So many families are living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to keep up with the rising cost of food, gas, housing, and so much more,” stated President Biden. “My plan includes more affordable housing.”

“We cannot solve inflation in America without addressing one of its critical drivers: skyrocketing rents,” stated National Low Income Housing Coalition president and CEO Diane Yentel. “Nationally, rents are up a record 14 percent, with rents in some metro areas up more than 20 percent. People with the lowest incomes, disproportionately people of color, are most harmed. With rents rising, homelessness increasing, public housing deteriorating, and millions of families struggling to keep a roof over their heads, federal investments are badly needed and long overdue.”
