2022 Session Update
My Senate colleagues and I have been hard at work hearing bills that have been sent to us by the House of Delegates. We defended our progress in the Commonwealth last week by blocking numerous bills from the House that would have led Virginia in the wrong direction.
We blocked several bills that would have made voting less accessible. For instance, HB34 would have repealed absentee ballot drop boxes, and HB185 would have repealed same-day voter registration. As a member of the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee, I believe it’s crucial to make voting secure and accessible, and these bills would have taken us in the wrong direction.
My Senate colleagues and I also blocked bills that would help us fight climate change. HB1301 would have repealed Virginia’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and HB 118 would have repealed the Virginia Clean Economy Act. Additionally, HB320, which would have prevented scheduled minimum wage increases, was defeated as well.
Ukraine
Last week, I gave a floor speech on the crisis in Ukraine. Our prayers are with the strong and resilient people of Ukraine who are fighting for their freedom, and also with our heroic Virginian service members who are currently stationed abroad who are ready to answer the call of service.
CDC Masking Guidelines
We are thankfully starting to see COVID-19 infection numbers rapidly dropping due to a combination of increased vaccination and immunity due to prior infection. The CDC has revised its masking guidance due to the changing nature of the pandemic. Guidelines are now based on levels of community transmission, as well as local hospital strain. If you are a low-risk individual in an area where new cases are low and hospitals are in good shape, the CDC advises that you do not need to wear a mask indoors. You can look up your county's Community COVID-19 Level on the CDC website -- note that Loudoun and Prince William counties are currently classified as "low" as of March 2nd. As always, if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID-19, or have had contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you are advised to continue masking indoors. You can read more about Community Levels guidance here.
