John,
Universal child care, lower prescription drug costs, investments in a green energy future …there was a lot to like in last night's State of the Union Address. That's why we're fighting tooth and nail for a democracy that can deliver on it.
One policy I want to highlight is President Biden's mention of the PRO Act, which would protect workers across the country and codify the right to organize. This piece of federal legislation would have a massive positive impact on our economy and the quality of life for workers right here in New York. Although New York city has some of the best worker protections in the country, workers still face intimidation when organizing.
I’m sure you’ve all been following the story about the wave of Starbucks workers organizing across the country. Well, five more stores are organizing right here in NYC and Long Island! Starbucks profits jumped more than 30% in the last three months of 2021 while revenue rose 19% in the same period. Starbucks workers did that!
Last month I visited the Starbucks at Astor Place to meet workers and support their organizing efforts. They called out the order for “Union Yes!”
The five pension funds that make up the New York City Retirement Systems collectively hold around $180 million in Starbucks securities. NYC’s public sector retirees have a vested interest in the company doing well, and as union members, they know that we all do better when we all do better.
That’s why I've joined with fellow institutional investors in calling on Starbucks to respect the rights of their workers to hold a free and fair union election.
The company has been pushing back hard with attempts to slow down union votes in Arizona, and firing a lead organizer at one of the stores in Buffalo.
If you agree that Starbucks workers deserve the right to organize, a free and fair election, and to work without fear of retaliation, then we need your help to pass the PRO Act now. Sign a Pass the Pro Act Now petition here.
Along with signing this petition and visiting unionizing Starbucks stores, I encourage you to call your federal representatives and express your support of the PRO Act. It’s time for federal legislation that makes it easier for workers like these Starbucks folks to organize.
In Solidarity,
Brad
