JUST RELEASED: LCV'S 2021 NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCORECARD
Friend,
Over the past 50 years, LCV has published the National Environmental Scorecard each year to track the environmental voting records of members of Congress. Until now, we had never felt it necessary to score the basic votes that uphold our country's peaceful transfer of power and electoral outcomes. 2021 was different. It brought heightened attacks on the foundation of our democracy and underscored the continued need to reckon with systemic racism, both of which are inextricably linked with the devastating impacts of the climate crisis.
Following the violent January 6th insurrection and subsequent attacks by some Republican members of Congress on the fundamental tenets of our country's governance, LCV scored votes on the basic functioning of our democracy, in addition to environmental issues, in both chambers in our 2021 LCV National Environmental Scorecard. The health of our democracy and our environment are deeply intertwined. Far too often, people of color and frontline communities are forced to bear disproportionately high burdens of pollution, and years of restrictive voting laws and partisan gerrymandering that limit their voice and political power have been a core part of perpetuating these environmental injustices.
The Scorecard shines a light on elected leaders' policy positions and empowers constituents to hold their representatives accountable on issues that people care about most, including clean air and clean water, climate change, environmental justice, voting rights, racial justice, and democracy.
How did your elected leaders stand up for climate action and democracy last year? Text SCORECARD to 877-877 or check out our newly released 2021 National Environmental Scorecard to find out who stood up for you.
Holding elected leaders accountable to the people is core to a functioning democracy. That's why we invite you to dive into the 2021 National Environmental Scorecard — to learn how your members of Congress voted on issues that impact your family, your community, and our country.
The 2021 Scorecard includes 22 House votes, half of which were justice- and democracy-related votes, including vitally important voting rights bills. The Scorecard also includes 34 Senate votes, six of which center on justice and democracy issues, reflecting the need to safeguard the foundations of our government from an alarming number of attacks on voting rights, which disproportionately impact people of color.
In 2022, it's up to us to hold the pro-environment, pro-democracy trifecta of federal leadership — President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and Leader Schumer — accountable for their commitments to pass legislation that will ensure a healthier, safer, more equitable climate and democracy for all.
