Dear John,

The February issue of Health Affairs features a Narrative Matters essay and poem. Listen to past authors read their essays on the Narrative Matters podcast.
Honoring Dr. Shalon Irving
The Racism and Health issue of Health Affairs features two Narrative Matters pieces.

The first is an essay by Tanjala Purnell and coauthors honoring Dr. Shalon Irving, a champion for health equity. Irving’s 2017 death brought national attention to maternal mortality among Black women in the US. This essay remembers her life and legacy.

You can listen to the essay through Health Affairs’ Narrative Matters podcast. It is read by Wanda Irving, chair of the board of Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project.

Also in February’s Narrative Matters section is a poem entitled “Identity,” written by Sharon Attipoe-Dorcoo.

Attipoe-Dorcoo read “Identity” at the Racism & Health Virtual Symposium. Rewatch the event on our website.
