There’s something we as a society don’t talk about enough: It is significantly harder to run for office as a woman. On top of the grueling work of campaigning, female candidates also have to navigate a number of significant obstacles from which men are typically exempt: difficulty fundraising, difficulty gaining endorsements, not to mention an onslaught of violent and sexual threats from the moment they announce their candidacy. As a result, exceptional candidates have recently been forced to drop out of their races:

In Wisconsin, radiologist Gillian Battino was running for senator to replace right-wing extremist, Ron Johnson. Last week, she announced that she would be suspending her campaign, leaving eight men and only one woman in the race.

In Pennsylvania, Senator Pat Toomey announced he was retiring, leaving room for Democrats to finally elect a female senator from PA. Dr. Val Arkoosh struggled to gain traction and ultimately dropped out of the race last month, leaving the Democratic primary down to 3 male frontrunners.

These are just a couple of examples of an unsettling trend we are seeing in races across the country. We cannot afford to continue letting exceptional female candidates – who have the potential to change the face of American government – fall through the cracks. While it is harder to run for office as a woman, it’s critical that we pursue seats in the rooms where decisions are being made.

Our HBM Endorsements team is gearing up to roll out our 2022 endorsements, but we need your help to raise $2,500 by the end of the week to help our candidates navigate the inevitable obstacles they’ll encounter throughout their campaigns.
