Hi John,
Andrew Joseph III was just 14-years-old when he attended “Student Day” at the Florida State Fair, where he was targeted for criminalization, detained by deputies, and ultimately abandoned by Hillsborough County Sheriffs on the side of a busy interstate where he was hit and killed by a white motorist.
His family has been struggling for justice in his name since the day Andrew's life was stolen on February 7, 2014, as the police responsible have been able to evade accountability under the veil of qualified immunity.
Black Lives Matter has been working with the Joseph family and others all across the country to end qualified immunity. And tomorrow, we're taking the next step in our fight.
Black Lives Matter, alongside the family of Andrew Joseph III, will be dropping off the #EndQualifiedImmunity petition demanding that Congress take swift action.
Fight with us at the Dept. of Justice at 12:00 pm EST!
Can't make it tomorrow? No worries!
You can still help out. Donate directly to the Andrew Joseph Foundation to directly support this family-led effort.
Police not being held accountable for their deadly actions is detrimental to our society and that's why it's beyond time to end qualified immunity. Qualified immunity has enabled law enforcement to escape liability for their misconduct for decades and it's time to end it for once and for all.
The police responsible for Andrew's death have been able to drag out the legal process for eight years now, not even offering his family
a day in court.
Whether it's by donating to help Andrew's family, adding your name to the #EndQualifiedImmunity petition, or showing up to the Dept. of Justice tomorrow – we're in this fight together, alongside Andrew's family.
Let's all lift the name Andrew Joseph III, share his story, pray for his family, commit to ending qualified immunity, and do the work necessary to build a world fit for the inhabitance of our children.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
