John,
A top environmental priority to add climate change to the Growth Management Act needs your help today.
As originally written, HB 1099 would ensure Washington’s largest and fastest growing communities plan for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled. HB 1099 also ensures all Washington communities are planning for climate hazards (like wildfires, drought, and sea level rise) and ensuring community resiliency.
HB 1099 was passed out of the Senate Ways and Means Committee with an amendment that removed nearly all mention of climate change from the bill, adding ”extreme weather events” or “changing conditions” in its place. It also removed the requirement for local jurisdictions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled.
You have an opportunity to fix this by demanding the Senate vote YES on HB 1099 [[link removed]]as it currently stands, then restore the bill's integrity during final negotiations between the House and Senate. Email your senator and tell them to pass HB 1099. [[link removed]]
We must ensure that HB 1099 is signed into law this year with both the mitigation and resiliency elements intact.
Email your Senator now! [[link removed]]
Thank you for all you do to advocate for environmental legislation,
Mariana Sanchez Castillo, they/them, Field Organizer
