I just got out of a special emergency briefing on Ukraine. I wanted to share with you, someone who cares deeply about refugee families, the latest update from our teams on the ground. Please find below what you need to know and how you can support.»

John: It's been one week since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and our teams are reporting widespread suffering and displacement with no end in sight.

We have all seen heartbreaking photos and videos over the past week. I keep thinking of the women, children and elderly who are trying to flee at packed border crossings, and are forced to wait for hours in the bitter cold with minimal belongings.

The situation is truly devastating, John, but we can't afford to look away. I know we can count on compassionate supporters like you to step up in moments of crisis. Please, send in an emergency donation to help displaced families in Ukraine and around the world:

Here's the latest from this morning's emergency briefing:
  • More than 160,000 Ukrainians have been internally displaced in the past week, and more than 870,000 have fled into neighboring countries. We have heard reports of shells striking hospitals, schools, and residential buildings in some of the country's largest cities.

  • If the fighting continues, there could be as many as 5 million refugees from Ukraine joining already record numbers of people displaced around the world.

  • We are witnessing the largest displacement crisis in Europe this century. Millions of people are already in need of urgent humanitarian aid, and the number is growing higher every day.

Our teams are on the ground in neighboring Poland, assessing humanitarian needs and mobilizing resources. We are scaling up, to respond with critical support for families fleeing across the border — and as always, we will stay for as long as we are needed.

One of the best ways you can help is by making a special emergency donation. Please, send your emergency donation now to help deliver critical aid to families in crisis zones like Ukraine:

It's easy to feel helpless in the face of an emergency like this. But as a compassionate supporter of the IRC, you can step up and help send displaced families the critical support they need to survive, recover and rebuild their lives.

I'll continue to keep you updated as the situation unfolds, and as I learn more from our teams on the ground.
