This week marks the beginning of Women's History Month, a celebration of the vital role that women have played in American History. We not only recognize the women who are mentioned few and far between in our history textbooks, but also the women– our mothers, grandmothers, sisters– the matriarchs whose untold stories have been the guiding force of our state and nation.
Unfortunately, the women of South Carolina are continuously failed and neglected by good-ole-boy politicians who only look out for themselves and their special interests. It’s been this way my whole life.
When I graduated from law school, our state ranked first in the country for the number of women murdered by men in intimate partner relationships. The awful reality is that we all know domestic abuse survivors– we've heard their stories and felt the residual suffering of the violence inflicted on our communities. Sadly, we’ve also heard stories like that of my cousin who was violently murdered by her ex-fiancé. All of these stories are too often the stories of South Carolina women.
From my role as the first Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Director to serving as a State Senator, I’ve fought the domestic violence crisis head-on. Now, I am committed to taking that fight to the Governor’s office so that all the women and survivors of domestic violence in our state have a champion who will finally prioritize this issue and so many more that the women of South Carolina face.
I have always been committed to ensuring women’s issues are at the forefront and that women have a place at the table, and I’m honored to have your support as I take that fight to the Governor’s Office.
