John - A few weeks ago, thanks to a newly-enacted update to Washington’s Extreme Risk Protection Order law, local law enforcement and federal agents were able to seize a cache of military-style weapons from an avowed neo-Nazi in Snohomish County who was preparing for a “race war.” Last night, news broke that the man, along with a fellow neo-Nazi, was arrested in Texas with a trunk full of guns and ammunition. There is no doubt that a hate-fueled massacre was averted.

The Alliance's advocacy work led to the creation of Extreme Risk Protection Orders in 2016, and we worked tirelessly with stakeholders to make sure it was implemented as intended. That work led us to advocate for updates to the law this year -- including the addition of threats of hate-based violence. This groundbreaking work has made this case the first of its kind in the nation.

On Tuesday, we co-hosted a Summit with the Anti-Defamation League about the intersection of hate and gun violence. We talked about Charleston, Orlando, Pittsburgh, El Paso and all the other shootings that were driven by hate. We highlighted this case out of Snohomish as an example of the tools we have to disarm hate.
