175+ organizations demand protection for Ukrainians in the U.S.

Escalating violence and conditions in Ukraine make it impossible for Ukrainians currently in the United States to safely return. NIJC joined more than 175 organizations in calling for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) and Special Student Relief (SSR) to protect Ukrainians already in the United States. People file civil rights complaint after unjust detention at O'Hare airport

NIJC is representing three people in a civil rights complaint after they were subject to intimidation, discriminatory treatment, and unjust detention by border patrol at O'Hare airport, despite having valid travel documents. Their experiences reflect a long pattern of mistreatment and abuse. It's unacceptable, and we demand an investigation. Read their stories and the complaint.

 

Reflecting on President Biden's first year in office

Ruben Loyo, associate director of NIJC's adult detention project, joined other experts on WTTW's Chicago Tonight to discuss the state of immigration policy after President Biden's first year in office. "There's definitely more this administration can do to rethink--and then--some of its most draconian measures and policies," he said. Court rules against Trump-era asylum policies

A federal court found that two Trump-era rules denying work authorization to people seeking asylum were illegal. A group of nearly 20 asylum seekers and three organizations, represented by NIJC and our partners, sued the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) challenging these rules. Class action settlement significantly limits ICE's mass raids & traffic stops

A new settlement in our class action lawsuit significantly limits U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement's (ICE) ability to detain immigrants in mass raids and traffic stops. NIJC and our partners brought this lawsuit on behalf of brave individuals who were racially profiled and subject to collateral arrests in Chicago and across northern Illinois in 2018. Leaked plans to expand surveillance and e-incarceration spark outrage

Recent media reports revealed that the Biden administration is planning an expanded home confinement and curfew pilot program for immigrants seeking asylum or other protection. NIJC joined other immigrant rights organizations to demand the Biden administration stop the expansion of surveillance of immigrant communities and end immigrant detention, including e-incarceration, completely.
