Dear Jack,
We know that with the war in Ukraine and other urgent crises, it can be very difficult to stay focused on other important issues. However, we need your help today. During an unnoticed high-level meeting taking place in Geneva in the next few days, governments are preparing to agree on a plan to turn 30% of Earth into Protected Areas by 2030.
This plan will involve grabbing vast areas of Indigenous Peoples’ lands and turning them into militarized national parks and reserves, where evictions, killings, torture and rape are commonplace.
At Survival we believe that public opinion is the only effective force for change, so we count on you.
Will you help us today to stop the biggest land grab in history?

Governments claim that it will both help combat climate change, and protect biodiversity, but they’re wrong – it will make them worse.
It will destroy countless Indigenous people, but their lands are home to 80% of the world’s biodiversity.
|
|
There really is no biodiversity without human diversity.
|
|
|
And – of course – Indigenous Peoples are the least responsible for environmental destruction.
Big conservation organizations support the plan. They’ll make millions through using the stolen lands to sell carbon offsets – the notorious trick that allows polluting companies to go on polluting, while pretending to look green. No wonder the world’s largest corporations support it too.
|
|
30x30 won’t just have a devastating impact on Indigenous lands: it will make the environmental crisis worse, and will therefore affect you, and me, and all humanity.
So today – which we’ve named Human Diversity Day – please take action in our email storm to help Indigenous Peoples stop the biggest land grab in history.
As Kipchumba Rotich of the Sengwer tribe (Kenya) said: “The 30x30 conservation rule… will see more Indigenous people lose their homes, will see more Indigenous people lose their livelihoods, will see more Indigenous people lose their lives – millions of people around the world.”
Please send an urgent email to the negotiators of this dangerous plan to demand the 30x30 plan is scrapped.

Subject: Stop the biggest land grab in history
Dear Negotiator,
I'm very concerned that the proposal to turn 30% of the Earth into Protected Areas could be agreed at the next Convention on Biological Diversity summit.
The creation of Protected Areas has brought devastating violence, hunger and ill-health to local and Indigenous people across Africa and Asia. It's rarely been done with the consent of Indigenous communities and there is no reason to believe that it will be any different now.
This will be the biggest land grab in history, it will dispossess hundreds of millions of people and, as the science shows, it won't save biodiversity.
Time is running out. We urge you to drop the 30% target, which is not only a dangerous diversion, but will destroy lives.
The most effective way to protect biodiversity is not to create more fortress conservation areas, but to respect and recognize the lands rights of Indigenous peoples. They are the best conservationists. 80% of the Earth’s biodiversity can be found in their territories.
It’s time to respect Indigenous peoples' rights and tackle the real causes of environmental destruction.
