? ? ? ? ? Dear friend,
The newest IPCC report, released yesterday, is yet another wake-up call on the inequitable and rapidly accumulating damage from climate change ? and a reminder that 2022 remains a critical year for bold action on climate.
Right now, we are not prepared for the negative impacts of the changing climate. And damages are mounting. With each passing day, climate change's worsening impacts become clearer and put more of us ? especially people in frontline communities who bear the brunt of climate pollution and disasters ? at risk of losing their homes, their livelihoods, and their lives. To combat this crisis at the speed and scale that science and justice demand, our nation's leaders must act now, and we have no time to waste.
Together with supporters like you, we're doing everything we can to win historic climate action. Over 30,000 LCV members like you have signed our petition demanding that President Biden and Congress act quickly on climate change, environmental justice and clean energy. We continue to advocate for swift passage in Congress of the $550 billion in climate and other provisions in the Build Back Better agenda, which will protect our health, cut dangerous pollution, advance environmental justice, and create good-paying clean energy jobs, including more than $162 billion in investments in environmental justice priorities supported by the Equitable and Just National Climate Platform.
We will keep you updated on our efforts to move climate action forward and honor the decades-long movement for progress advanced by environmental justice leaders and climate advocates across the country.
And now, here are your LCV Top 5 items in the ongoing fight for climate and environmental justice for the month of February:
? ? The Top Story LCV Statement on Nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to Supreme Court ?
On February 25, President Joe Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the United States Supreme Court. Once confirmed, Judge Jackson will be the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Shortly after, LCV released a statement of support [link removed] for this historic nomination:
?The historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the nation?s highest Court is a milestone in the fight for racial justice and equity. We applaud President Biden for fulfilling his campaign promise to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, showing that elections have consequences, and for selecting a fair-minded jurist who will uphold the promise of equal justice under law. This next Justice will impact our climate, environment, and voting rights for decades to come. We are confident that Judge Jackson will add a critical perspective and unique voice on the Court, and that her distinguished service on the D.C. Circuit and D.C. District Courts, as well as the U.S. Sentencing Commission, makes her exceptionally well-qualified. We look forward to the Senate swiftly confirming Jackson while simultaneously addressing massive challenges and transformational opportunities for our environment, democracy, and lower courts.?
Judge Jackson currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, to which she was confirmed with bipartisan support in 2021. She has been nominated to fill the seat of Justice Stephen Breyer, who announced his retirement in late January. To learn more about Judge Jackson, click here. [link removed]

? ? THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW
Right now, the best thing you can do is to make your voice heard on critical federal action to protect our lands and waters! [link removed] The Biden-Harris administration has committed to an ambitious conservation goal ? protecting 30 percent of our lands, waters, and oceans in this country by 2030 ? known as 30x30. The administration is developing a new tool, American Conservation and Stewardship Atlas, to guide their work toward 30x30 and they're seeking public input.
LCV believes it is critical that the Atlas prioritize equitable access and partnerships with local communities to correct environmental injustices including a larger role for tribes in land management, protecting biodiversity as well as ecosystem stability, and addressing our climate crisis. There's only one week left until the public comment deadline on March 7 ? will you add your voice now?
