I've been making some hay lately over what I consider to be the Republican's sham "data privacy" proposal. It's both awful for Florida's businesses, and doesn't do enough to actually protect you.

First, you should know that I ran as a business-friendly Democrat because that's who I am. I'm a small business owner who started my company on a mountain of credit card debt and a lot of prayer, so I'm sensitive to the needs of what makes our local economy continue to grow and how to create new good-paying jobs. I believe in fighting for the little guy, but also in growing our shared economy, together.

I'm also probably one of the only members who can actually code. I grew up in the internet age and I feel like we all have a pretty good understanding that "cookies" are not just for eating anymore.

The truth is, Tallahassee Republicans want to attack "Big Tech" but in doing so they have designed a bill that targets businesses small and large alike , regardless of whether or not they profit off of your data.

In the Judiciary Committee and again on the House Floor I offered six amendments to their proposal including two that are quite simple:

✔️A fix that both RAISES penalties and would give companies 10-days to fix any mistake before they can be sued.

✔️A requirement that politicians and political parties obey the same data-sharing requirements that we're asking companies to adhere to.

The fact that politicians voted against holding themselves to the same rules they require of others isn't surprising. But what is surprising is that House Republicans would be willing to harm Florida's business' just so they can score political points with their base. On second thought, maybe that shouldn't be so surprising after all...

I should add here, unlike apparently some others, I have never sold, shared, or transferred your data. If you want to see what data I do have on you, and perhaps update it if it's wrong, simply click here [[link removed]] .

The reality is, companies already have data on all of us. The time to do this was 15-years ago and not with a patchwork of states all doing their own thing. Republican's LOVE to hate on California and New York, but the Republican proposal is actually MORE burdensome and harmful to Florida's small businesses that those from more "liberal" states .

If you want to take steps to protect your digital privacy, here's some things you can do RIGHT NOW [[link removed]] . None of these practical steps include suing every small business you've had an interaction with since the dawn of the internet age.
