India is on the cusp of considerable growth, both economically and in terms of its population, which will drive an expansion in infrastructure, energy consumption and resource use. Under business-as-usual practices, this growth could lead to much higher emissions, but new research shows that India can take greater climate action and grow its economy. In a new article, Deepthi Swamy and Varun Agarwal explore eight ambitious climate policies that would drastically cut the nation’s emissions, increase its GDP by up to an additional 1.5%, create up to 40 million new jobs and much more. What Cropland Expansion Means for People and the Planet

While crops are essential to feed the world’s growing population, a new study in Nature Food

shows that current practices are not sustainable. Cropland has expanded by an area the size of Egypt in just two decades, often at the expense of forests and other natural ecosystems. Five major takeaways emerged from this study, including where this expansion is happening, how fast it’s happening and what impacts might occur without better global land use.
