Friend,
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. US Representative Melanie Stansbury. US Representative Teresa Leger Fernandez. Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver. Commissioner of Public Lands Stephanie Garcia Richard. And many, many more powerhouse Democratic women serving at every level of government across New Mexico.
They are the most recent in a long line of women leaders. New Mexico has a proud history of electing bold women Democrats to office.
In honor of Women’s History Month, let’s meet two trailblazing New Mexican women:
NM’s first Madam Secretary of State Soledad Chávez de Chacón [[link removed]]
[NM’s first Madam Secretary of State Soledad Chávez de Chacón]
The first woman elected to statewide office in New Mexico was Secretary of State Soledad Chávez de Chacón, who served from 1923 to 1926. She was also the first Hispanic woman in the United States to be elected to a statewide office and went on to serve in the NM House of Representatives in 1934. [NM’s first woman elected to Congress, Congresswoman Georgia Lee Lusk]
New Mexico’s first Congress woman , Georgia Lee Lusk, served in the US House of Representatives from 1947 to 1949. She also served as the state superintendent of public schools, TWICE. Click here to read more [[link removed]] .
This year, we will walk in the footsteps of Secretary Chacón and Representative Lusk by fighting to keep Democratic women in office. We will re-elect Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, US Representatives Teresa Leger Fernandez and Melanie Stansbury, Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver and Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard.
In 2022, the Democratic Party of New Mexico is working to elect strong Democratic women up-and-down the ticket. Will you please join us in honoring New Mexico Women’s History AND in fighting for New Mexico’s future by donating $50 or $100 today? [[link removed]]
