Arise legislative recap: February 28, 2022

Arise's Jilisa Milton discusses HB 312, which would prohibit teaching certain "divisive concepts" related to race, religion and sex in public K-12 schools, public colleges and universities, and state employee training programs. This bill could undermine a healthy educational environment in Alabama by chilling full, truthful discussions of key historical and current events. Jilisa also provides an update on the General Fund budget.

Alabama Arise Action: Attend the Untax Groceries Rally on March 15!

Food and other necessities should not be taxed. We have an opportunity to help families make ends meet and protect funding for public schools. Please join us for a rally to support removing the state sales tax on groceries in Alabama on Tuesday, March 15, from noon to 1 p.m. on the State House steps in Montgomery. Register and find more information at the link below.

Alabama Arise: Tell your state senator to untax groceries!

Please take a minute TODAY to urge your state senator to untax groceries by voting YES on SB 43 by Sen. Andrew Jones. Alabama's state sales tax on groceries is a cruel tax on survival. This tax drives struggling people deeper into poverty and makes it harder for families to make ends meet, particularly in these times of rising food prices. You can help end the tax on groceries and protect public schools by calling your state senator today and asking them to vote YES on SB 43.

Alabama Political Reporter: Activists: Anti-riot bill an 'attack on the core principles of American democracy'

Last week, Alabama Arise joined 17 other organizations in signing a letter opposing HB 2, an anti-protest bill. The letter says, "HB 2 attacks the core principles of American democracy, including the right to assemble and participate in dissent in the form of protest, which the First Amendment protects." The House unfortunately passed the bill last week, but there's still a real chance to stop this shortsighted legislation in the Senate.

AL.com: Alabama losing millions in federal rental assistance due to delays

Delays in distributing federal rental assistance funds raise serious questions about Alabama's approach to the program. "The biggest lesson is that contracting private companies to deal with public goods is never the goal and should never be the first step we take," Arise's Dev Wakeley tells AL.com.

Cover Alabama: Collecting postpartum stories

Arise's Cover Alabama campaign is collecting stories from Alabama mothers about their obstacles when becoming a new mom. Our goal is to gather these stories and highlight the ways that lawmakers can make life easier for new parents, including but not limited to increasing health care coverage and access to providers statewide. Please consider sharing your story with our story collector Whit Sides, especially if you had Medicaid coverage or could have benefited from it. Feel free to provide as much or as little detail as you're comfortable sharing.

Bills we're watching

  • HB 135 by Rep. Danny Garrett, R-Trussville, is the Education Trust Fund budget that funds K-12 schools, pre-K, higher education and other education-related services. The House Ways and Means Education Committee will consider HB 135 and accompanying education appropriation bills on Tuesday and Wednesday. Arise is monitoring HB 135.
  • HB 200 by Rep. Merika Coleman, D-Birmingham, would end driver’s license suspensions for failure to pay fines and fees. The House Judiciary Committee will consider HB 200 on Wednesday. Arise supports HB 200.
  • SB 156 by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, would require both custodial and non-custodial parents to cooperate with child support enforcement to qualify for SNAP food assistance. The Senate could vote on SB 156 as soon as Tuesday. Arise opposes SB 156.
