So much is going on in the world — just this week alone. There are things to be hopeful about and things to be really saddened by, and we wanted to take a minute to address climate news.


John, we know the news can be depressing, and we recognize and affirm however you feel. But we won’t let our fates be sealed by greed, despair, the wealthy, or the fossil fuel industry. 1. The IPCC Report

The IPCC — the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — dropped another horrifying (but not surprising) report today, just months after they released an apocalyptic report in August 2021. And John, the findings aren’t good.

This report is clear: if we continue on our current path, there won't be water to drink, there won't be clean air to breathe, and millions of people will die — and we know frontline communities will bear the brunt of the devastating impacts of climate change, while fossil fuel corporations continue to profit off our pain.

This really sucks and is also what we’ve been saying for years and years — we cannot keep the status quo going.

2. EPA v. West Virginia

In addition to the IPCC report, today is also the first day of the Supreme Court hearing arguments in the court case: EPA v. West Virginia . This case, decided by a Republican stacked court, will define what our government can do on climate in the next several decades. Should the ruling pass, it would severely restrict the U.S. government’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

The ruling not only threatens our chances at averting the worst of the climate crisis and ensuring environmental justice, but it would also likely allow the conservative-led Supreme Court to continue having veto power over federal policy.

John, all of this bad news and grief also gives us more reason to be a loud and powerful movement – and more reason to turn out in elections and mobilizations, not step back.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be able to start that fight. We know elections are not the end all be all of anything, but they are one tool we use to flex our power and make our anger loud. If we win big, our voice will ring loud and clear – the status quo is killing us, and we need a Green New Deal now.

I know you might be tempted to give up. I know it might feel like our chances of stopping this crisis are shrinking. But we can’t stop. We just can’t. There’s simply too much at stake.
