We're closing in on one week since Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

This morning, we woke up to reports that a round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine had concluded, only to find out shortly after that more Russian shelling had occurred in Kharkiv -- Ukraine's second largest city. "Dozens” of civilian casualties were reported, and Ukrainian officials called the attack a "war crime" and a deliberate targeting of civilian areas.

I strongly condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It's a blatant assault on international law and shows a callous disregard for the loss of innocent life. I support the Biden Administration and our international allies efforts to continue sanctions on Vladimir Putin, his cronies, and the Russian government.

I remain hopeful that peace talks and severe sanctions will put an end to Putin's aggression, but we must also be prepared to bolster the humanitarian effort to support Ukrainians fleeing the conflict. The International Rescue Committee has begun mobilizing resources to assist displaced Ukrainians.

It's clear that Putin is determined to expand Russia’s sphere of influence in Eastern Europe through disinformation, division, and force. Tens of millions of lives are at risk, and a protracted conflict could quickly dissolve into a humanitarian crisis.
