The science is clear — human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are warming the planet. As a result, the western United States has been experiencing bigger and more deadly wildfires, devastating mudslides, and low snowmelt. And over the last 20 years, a megadrought not seen in the last 1,200 years!
The megadrought threatens endangered species like the Chinook salmon. Already under pressure from increased human population growth and water demand, it’s feared the salmon might not survive climate change.
A new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change found that human-caused climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of drought conditions, with devastating impacts on waterways and wildlife.
Each December, thousands of Chinook salmon leave the Pacific Ocean and swim hundreds of miles upstream to spawn in waters cooled by the melting snow and ice from the Sierra mountains. But due to the warming planet, the salmon’s waterways are drying up and becoming too warm to support their winter runs. Last year, about 23 percent of Chinook salmon died before they could spawn.
Climate change is imperiling life on Earth in so many ways, but we can still reverse course if we act quickly. That’s why Food & Water Action organizers are mobilizing supporters to help pass local, state and federal policies to move us toward a sustainable climate future and fighting bad legislation that would prop up dirty energy.
