Team, With the midterm election getting closer by the day, Republicans are signaling what their plans are should they take the House this November. One of the most shocking things we have heard so far, should Republicans have the votes, are their plans to repeal the Home Rule Act of 1974, a law that allowed D.C. to govern itself. Friends, with a population larger than Wyoming and Vermont, over 700,000 tax-paying American citizens, and a successful self-government, D.C. should be granted statehood, instead of facing a federal government takeover. Let’s be clear on what this actually is: a power grab from an increasingly authoritative far-right Republican Party. Making D.C. a state would make way for two more Senate seats in Washington. Republicans know that these Senators would represent one of the most diverse constituencies in the country — a constituency that has a strong Democratic leaning.
Republicans also recently made clear how unhappy they are with Mayor Bowser’s “mismanagement” of the city, and should they get the opportunity, they will hold her accountable. The only people the mayor is accountable to are the voters, not the Republican party.
