Dear John,

An article in the Racism & Health issue examines inequities in the use of high-quality home health agencies.
Inequities In Home Health Agency Use
In 2017, home health care was used by approximately 3.4 million homebound Medicare beneficiaries and cost Medicare $18 billion.

Medicare home health provides skilled nursing care; physical, occupational, and speech therapies; medical social services; and intermittent home health aide services.

In their February article, Shekinah Fashaw-Walters and coauthors examine the associations between Medicare home health patients’ individual- and neighborhood-level characteristics and receipt of care from high-quality home health agencies.

They report that Black, Hispanic, and low-income home health patients have lower use of high-quality home health agencies, on average, than their White and higher-income counterparts, even when living in neighborhoods with similar racial and income characteristics
