John, today the US Senate will vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act.
This historic vote is a key step in the ongoing fight for reproductive freedom. This past year alone we saw some of the boldest, most extreme, coordinated attacks on abortion access by GOP-led state legislatures.
The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) safeguards abortion access by creating a statutory right for health care providers to provide, and for their patients to receive, abortion care — this is especially critical in light of recent signs from our far-right leaning Supreme Court that they will dismantle Roe v. Wade in an upcoming abortion case.
The Senate can and MUST protect safe, legal abortion access, codify Roe v. Wade into law, and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. Will you add your name to our petition and tell lawmakers you support access to safe, legal, abortion with no restrictions? It’s critical we have a big show of grassroots support today.
We won’t sugarcoat it, John, reproductive rights are in danger and we need serious action.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, a leading research and policy organization committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights, a total of 1,338 abortion restrictions have been enacted since Roe v. Wade was handed down in 1973 — 44% of these in the past decade alone.
This means for millions of women and people of reproductive age, especially Black, brown, low-income and working class folks, abortion access is already out of reach. Passing WHPA is just the first step in ensuring access for anyone who needs abortion care, regardless of race, income, or location.
If enacted, WHPA would protect the right to access abortion care across the country, even if Roe v. Wade is overturned — a very real threat in 2022 which will put millions of lives at risk.
In solidarity,
Women's March
