The world looked on in horror this weekend as Russia took military action against Ukraine. This war received nearly universal condemnation by the international community, with even the famously neutral Swiss government freezing Russian assets in response to the attack.

But here at home, extremists in the GOP took to social media and the airwaves to praise Vladimir Putin. Donald Trump called Putin a “genius,” while Tucker Carlson downplayed the invasion—and previously said he was rooting for Russia. QAnon platforms cheered on Moscow. And a poll last week found Putin with higher favorability than Joe Biden among Republican voters.

Let’s be perfectly clear—Putin is not a genius. He is a tyrant. He is a killer. He is the antithesis of everything we stand for as Americans. But the pro-Putin wing of the Republican Party is loud, and it is growing.

The danger to our democracy these “Kremlin apologists” represent cannot be understated. By siding with a thuggish dictator, this wing of the GOP is showing us their hand in how they will govern should they come to power this midterm election or in 2024. We need to do everything in our power to stop them from doing so.
