John,
A few weeks ago I wrote asking you to join me in taking action to stop billionaire, Trump-appointed Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, from sabotaging the USPS and squandering the once-in-a-generation opportunity to make progress on the Biden Administration’s climate action plan by slashing carbon pollution by millions of metric tons, and investing in America’s growing electric vehicle industry.
DeJoy ignored your objections – and those of the President and the Environmental Protection Agency.
In complete defiance of Biden’s executive order to electrify the entire 645,000-vehicle federal fleet by 2027, DeJoy has sealed the deal on a $6 billion dollar, decade-long plan to purchase 165,000 vehicles from Oshkosh Defense – 90% of which will be gas-guzzling trucks that get just 8.6 miles to the gallon (a meager improvement over the 8.2 miles per gallon of the decades-old trucks in the fleet today).
The U.S. transportation sector is already responsible for roughly a third of our nation’s total climate emissions each year. Gas-powered vehicles are literally fueling climate change. Communities like mine along the northern coast of California are already facing historic droughts and devastating wildfires and we are bracing for more impacts from sea level rise.
DeJoy’s stubborn decision isn’t just out of line with our values and priorities – it’s a terrible business decision and a waste of taxpayer money. In choosing to spend billions on dirty, inefficient mail trucks that will soon be obsolete, DeJoy cut corners and bent rules. He awarded this contract before initiating a mandatory environmental review, let alone a review of the fiscal impact and policy implications of such an enormous purchase. When the USPS finally did conduct an environmental review, the EPA found that it was wildly insufficient. Nearly a year ago, my colleagues and I called on the USPS Board of Governors to halt this decision while there was legislation pending in Congress – this too has been willfully ignored. For all these reasons and more, DeJoy’s scheme is on shaky legal ground.
There’s still time to stop DeJoy and redirect USPS to a forward-looking plan to modernize its fleet with clean, safe and efficient zero-emission vehicles. This is the Postal Service’s chance to save billions and become a global leader in the transition to clean vehicles.
We need an overwhelming number of people to sign this call to action. Will you be one of them?
