Dear Friend,

Last week, I attended a virtual public hearing held by Florida government officials who have proposed a new rule that would strip state licenses from Florida shelters and foster care providers that care for unaccompanied children. The rule could have the effect of shutting down all existing facilities that care for unaccompanied children in Florida.

During the hearing, Florida officials made it clear that they were targeting unaccompanied children, even suggesting that their job is only to look out for the needs of children in their state who are “lawful citizens.” Along with many other advocates, Florida providers, and Florida residents, I repeatedly asked the officials questions about the intent of the rule and their understanding of its impact on children’s safety. Their answers raised serious concerns that the proposed rule is discriminatory and will harm children.

Before the rule is finalized, state officials will consider the opinions of Florida residents. I’m writing today to ask you to submit a comment opposing the proposed rule, to make clear to Governor DeSantis and Florida government officials that the people of Florida are committed to the safety and health of all children and to being a place of welcome for immigrants.

The deadline to submit a comment and make your voice heard is Thursday, March 3, at 11:59 pm ET. We've put together a template comment to get you started. Click here for that and more information about submitting a comment by the deadline. This effort should take just a few minutes but could have an immediate impact.

Thank you for standing with immigrant children and families in Florida,
