Esther* was just a little girl when she was trafficked to Lake Volta. She spent day after day working in slavery, tending to a massive fire pit where she smoked fish to sell at a local market. She handled raw fish all day, working in the relentless heat of a fire, and endured beatings at the hands of the people exploiting her.

After years of breathing in smoke and fumes, Esther’s lungs and throat have been damaged, and her voice is hollow and raspy. Watch our new film about Esther's rescue and see her story for yourself.

Esther was abused for nearly 10 years. Then, a boy who was trapped on the island with her was rescued and told us about Esther’s suffering. Because of his bravery and your generosity, we could go back and search for her.
