Welcome to Monday, February 28th, associates...

Thousands of U.S. troops are deploying for the first-ever NATO Response Force activation amid Russia's attack on Ukraine.

Numerous countries announced contributions of military aid for Ukraine last week during the initial days after Russia's invasion and over the weekend.

Sweden announced Sunday that it will send Ukraine 5,000 anti-tank weapons; 5,000 body shields; 5,000 helmets; and 135,000 field rations. This is the first time Sweden has sent weapons to another country engaged in armed conflict since it provided military aid to Finland during the Winter War against the Soviet Union in 1939-40.

The U.S., Canada, and the European Union announced in a joint statement Saturday that select Russian banks will be cut off from the worldwide SWIFT financial transactions and payments system due to the invasion of Ukraine.

The announcement comes after some European countries had been reluctant to remove Russia from the system altogether.

Additionally, the leaders of the U.S., Canada, and the EU will impose measures to prevent the Russian Central Bank from using its reserves of international currency to undermine the impact of sanctions.

Biden Nominates Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to SCOTUS

President Biden tweeted Friday morning that he will nominate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to the Supreme Court to replace Justice Stephen Breyer, who announced his retirement when the current term ends in June or July, pending the confirmation of his successor.

If confirmed, Jackson would be the first black woman to serve on the high court, fulfilling Biden’s campaign pledge. She would also be the second mother with school-age children to serve on SCOTUS, joining Justice Amy Coney Barrett who was confirmed in 2020.

Senate Democrats haven’t yet scheduled Jackson’s confirmation hearings in the Judiciary Committee, although party leaders have said they would like to move the process along quickly
