WHAT:
General Meeting, Thursday, March 3, 7:30pm to 8:30pm (EST). Our speaker at this meeting is World Wildlife Fund spokesperson, Alex Nicols-Vineza, who will talk about, “What’s Up With Food Waste?"
LEARN:
Today, an estimated 1.3 billion tons of food, or one-third of all the food produced in the world goes to waste on the farms, during distribution or at the points of consumption. It could be enough calories to feed every undernourished person on the planet.
But wasted food is also an environmental issue. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it. And if food goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide.
Alex is the team lead for the Food Waste Warrior program, which offers grants and a hands-on curriculum for schools to reduce their food waste and learn about the food system. He recently helped lead a coalition of environmental NGOs to develop a policy action plan for Congress and administration to reduce US food loss & waste by 50% by 2030.
ACTION:
Find out what we can do on a personal level, and on a public policy level
