What We’re Reading
Raise the Roof. Curbed's Suburbs Issue <[link removed]> is a fantastic look at the changing face of a much-despised part of America. We particularly enjoyed an examination of increasing diversity in the subsurbs <[link removed]> and a cautionary tale <[link removed]> about the seductions of home ownership.
Pay Your Dues. Opportunity Zones struck again in Florida, where a superyacht marina qualified for special tax treatment <[link removed]>. That means big bucks for the billionaires behind a luxury development at the site. Meanhwile, South Dakota has risen as an unlikely tax haven <[link removed]> and the rich are loving it.
Underwater. They call this Louisiana town "Flood City"; after 17 floods in 30 years, it's being abandoned <[link removed]>. And residents of New Orleans <[link removed]> may be facing the same choice. But climate change isn't the only human-made catastrophe leaving communities in soggy ruins: At least 1,680 dams across the U.S. <[link removed]> are in a very hazardous state.

A recent arrest in New York City over selling churros on a subway platform <[link removed]> highlighted a world of unlicensed street vendors in New York. Many are undocumented immigrants, and a substantial number are women. Artificial scarcity of vending permits has made this underworld inevitable, but the city council could opt to issue more and relieve the pressure of a very long waiting list and a bustling black market in leasing vending permits.
It would be a smart move: Street vendors make cities safer <[link removed]>.
