Dear Friends,
First and foremost, I would like to express my sincerest feelings of solidarity and say that my heart is with the people of Ukraine as they endure a savage and illegal violation of their national sovereignty by Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
This invasion is an unjustified and criminal incursion by Putin, and the United States and our European allies are responding with unity and resolve to stand firm against his actions.
President Biden and leaders across the world have wisely implemented sanctions — our best non-military option — to impose economic consequences for the Kremlin, Russia’s defense sector, and Putin’s petro-oligarch cronies for this blatant violation of international law.
I want to be perfectly clear: We must continue to provide unwavering support for Ukraine and our NATO allies in Europe, while continuing to seek a diplomatic solution to this crisis.
This horrifying invasion is yet another example of the importance of eliminating American and European reliance on Russian oil and gas as quickly as possible.
Russia is using revenues from their oil and gas and our collective worldwide addiction to fossil fuels to fund this crisis. Putin and his oligarch cronies continue to line their pockets with dirty oil and gas money at the expense of European energy independence and the Ukrainian people. This must come to an end.
It is indisputable that fossil fuels drive brutal violence throughout the world, and conflicts which will worsen year after year as the global climate crisis continues. Our global fossil fuel addiction is a catalyst for conflict, but a Green New Deal would be a pathway for peace.
The United States must act as a global leader on this issue.
We must lead our European allies and nations around the world in order to protect us all — not just from Russia and their corrupt leadership, but from the existential threat of climate change and the devastating consequences it will have across the planet.
We can save countless lives by transitioning rapidly to clean, renewable energy and breaking free of our country's and world's addiction to gas and oil — and I am confident that so long our movement continues to stand together, we will do just that.
In the immediate term, we must continue to support and pray for Ukraine, and not forget that it is ordinary people — in Ukraine, in Russia, and around the world — who will bear the true cost of Vladimir Putin’s crimes.
We must work urgently to de-escalate this conflict and bring about a diplomatic solution to end it. I promise that I will do everything in my power as a United States Senator to ensure that that happens.
Thank you.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
