Dear Friend,

Earthjustice exists to hold the government accountable to the promises it’s made — in the form of our environmental laws — to the people and wildlife that depend on a healthy environment to thrive.

Despite some of the optimism the Biden administration brought last year, we’re in a position we’ve been in before — where leaders who claim to support our values need to be reminded that the law compels them to do the right thing.

Sometimes, that reminder comes in the form of a lawsuit from Earthjustice. Other times, it’s tens of thousands of supporters like you engaging in a comment period, perhaps years after the successful lawsuit that required it, to remind the government that we are still watching what it is doing. Our collective power comes from our ability to never back down from a challenge — no matter how long it takes, no matter how many comment periods they have, we’ll be there.

We’ve got a mix of actions below that reflect the various stages of the action-taking process. The Postal Service already held a comment period and finalized an environmental assessment with deeply flawed assumptions slanted against electric trucks. The EPA is developing new regulations and needs to hear from you in the comment period that it can and should be more ambitious in protecting people from lead exposure. And the Forest Service needs some proactive encouragement to do more to protect climate forests across the country. You are engaging at every step in the process — before, during, and after comment periods — and it’s going to make a difference in the lives of millions of people in the end.

Your activism is creating change — and we’re just getting started. Click here to engage at every step by taking all of the actions below on one page.

Protect the Western Arctic

ConocoPhillips' Willow project is still a disaster for the climate. It is the largest single oil and gas drilling operation currently proposed on federal lands and could generate more carbon than 56 million cars emit in a year. Beyond the damage to our climate, the plan calls for 37 miles of new gravel roads, seven bridges, an airstrip, and a gravel mine, which would jeopardize the health and traditional practices of nearby Alaska Native communities and devastate local wildlife like polar bears, migratory birds, and caribou.

Electrify the Postal Service

We were optimistic the Postal Service would listen to us about the benefits of an electric fleet — cleaner air, lower emissions, and healthier communities — but it doubled down on its inexplicable preference for polluting trucks in the recently published Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Let's make sure the Governing Board hears us this time by sending our message directly to them.

Tell the EPA to strengthen its draft lead strategy

Lead exposure, particularly during childhood, can result in devastating health impacts. Even in tiny amounts, children exposed to lead can suffer permanent, irreparable consequences, including learning disabilities, hyperactivity, and impaired hearing. Lead exposure is also linked to serious illness in adults, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes how dangerous lead poisoning is to children and communities – yet why does the EPA refuse to commit to change its regulations for lead paint hazards (which includes lead in paint, soil, and dust) and lead in water to make them truly health protective?.

Protect our oldest forests

Today, we are pushing the Biden administration to do more to meet the moment and address climate change by preventing logging of our carbon–rich old-growth and mature trees in federal forests nationwide. Protecting these trees is one of the most cost–effective climate solutions available. These forests, classified as climate forests, store more carbon per acre than tropical rainforests, which means protecting United States forests is an essential part of meeting our commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Tell Biden: Climate can't wait

Scientists have warned us for years that extreme weather caused by climate change will become more frequent and severe. We’re feeling the impacts now. Communities across the country continue to struggle as climate disasters become more frequent and more destructive. We have the chance to pass the most significant investments in climate, justice, and clean energy in our history. It’s time to act now.
