A little more than one year ago, a violent mob of insurrectionists stormed the Capitol at the behest of Donald Trump in an effort to overturn the results of the presidential election.

I was safe that day, but it was clear our democracy is not.

The truth is, Republicans have been systematically attacking our democracy for decades. They’ve done it by allowing the wealthy and the powerful to buy our elections while making it harder for everyone else to vote.

It’s only gotten worse since Trump lost.

Was the Republican response to losing the last election to reconsider their approach to addressing the needs of the American people?

No, it was doubling-down on making it even harder for people to vote.

Here in Arizona, it requires 2/3 vote of the House and State Senate to pass a tax increase, but you only need 50% to pass anti-voter initiatives like limiting vote by mail, banning the use of ballot drop boxes, adding new voter ID laws, and giving power to the legislature to reject election results.

That is why it is so frustrating that two conservative senators, including one from Arizona, refuse to act to defend our democracy.

I am not going to give up. I didn’t serve our country in Iraq to watch democracy die here at home. But I cannot do it alone:
