Dear Christopher,

Our greatest source of wealth-creation is the creativity and productivity of the American people. Therefore, anything that allows people greater access to the realization of their own potential — healthcare, education, culture — should be seen as a boost and not a suck on our economy.

We need to change more than policy; we need to change our economic paradigm. We need to switch from the idea of improving the economy as a way to improve humanity’s lot, to improving humanity’s lot as a way to improve both the economy AND the state of our humanity. We need to fundamentally shift from an economic to a humanitarian bottom line.

America should spend far more money on ways to improve people's lives (education and peace) and far less on ways to destroy people's lives (prisons, wars). Such a perversion of our values, codified in public policy for no other reason than for short-term corporate profit, must be challenged and rejected by our generation of Americans.

Together, we can course-correct. We can reclaim conscience as a guiding principle for American capitalism, for our government, and for the society in which we live. This philosophical dedication will heal our country, ushering in a season of moral repair that in time will put our country back on track.

Changes must be integrative — both internal and external — if we’re to deal effectively with our society’s problems. We must address symptoms but we must also address their internal causes. In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., “We need a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.” See the Issues section at Marianne2020.com [[link removed]] for policy positions that re-align us with the dictates of the heart.

With love,
Marianne
