Smithfield claims it has an “industry-leading sustainability program.” The reality? It’s one of the biggest industrial polluters in the United States.
Smithfield regularly violates bare-minimum environmental regulations and is making false and misleading claims about the sustainability of its pork products and its environmental record. The company claims that using factory farm waste to produce so-called “biogas” is a climate change solution — a cynical ploy to dupe consumers into thinking they’re buying sustainably produced meat.
This unfair and illegal practice not only harms consumers and communities, but also hurts truly sustainable family farmers who invest the time, effort, and money into raising animals in a way that actually matches what conscientious consumers expect.
Over one year ago, Food & Water Watch filed a complaint against Smithfield with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), asking it to investigate and take enforcement action against Smithfield by requiring it to remove its misleading claims and to stop making similar misrepresentations in the future. But one year later, it appears the FTC has done nothing and Smithfield’s greenwashing campaign continues unabated.
We’re keeping pressure on the FTC to stop Smithfield from lying about its environmental record while it endangers our communities and environment. It’s time for the FTC to act and stop Smithfield’s deception.
