President Biden has announced his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court: Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
When the president and I met earlier this month, I urged him to select a nominee with powerful intellect and profound integrity – and he has more than met that standard with Judge Jackson.
Judge Jackson has an exceptional record of personal accomplishment and unquestionable qualifications as a brilliant jurist. She is a legal star – an example of the best of America.
Importantly, if confirmed, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court in its 233 year history. Her confirmation would be a long-overdue step toward ensuring our nation’s highest court reflects the diversity of the country it serves.
As a member of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, I look forward to discussing Judge Jackson’s remarkable qualifications with colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the weeks to come. I also feel an urgent need to move swiftly with the confirmation process, given that Democrats currently control the Senate by the slimmest of margins.
As I’m sure you don’t need to be reminded: Mitch McConnell has played political games with Supreme Court nominees many times before. Who could forget the lengths he went to block President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland?
That’s why now is the time – while Democrats control the Senate – to act swiftly to begin repairing the harm that McConnell and Donald Trump so egregiously inflicted on our nation’s highest court.
But before our confirmation hearings begin – and before the partisan attacks on Judge Jackson begin in earnest – I need to know where you stand on President Biden’s historic nomination. Please, make your voice heard right away:
