Weekend Reading

Dear John,

This week the Russian military began shelling and missile attacks on cities across Ukraine. These attacks are a brutal assault on Ukrainians, and AFSC joins with people around the world in calling for them to halt immediately. As we mourn the loss of life in this conflict, we also hope the world will learn the lessons from recent wars. Flooding the region with weapons is not the answer. Instead, we need investments in diplomacy, peacebuilding, and arms control at the global level.

We invite you to:

Read AFSC's full statement, which includes a message from Ukrainian Quakers: The invasion of Ukraine must be stopped – but U.S. military aid is not the answer. [link removed]

Take action: Tell Congress: Say NO to military responses and invest in diplomacy, refugee protection, and international cooperation instead. [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

TODAY (1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT): Join our online film screening of “Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story”: The film honors Dr. Howard Thurman (1899-1981): Civil Rights mentor, educator, preacher, theologian, and prolific author. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Stephen W. Angell, Earlham School of Religion. This event is part of the Black Quaker Lives Matter Film Festival. [link removed]

What we want to hear in the State of the Union: On March 1, President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address. We asked AFSC staff who work on issues ranging from economic justice to immigration and peace what they hope to hear in the address. [link removed]

Reflections on ending the death penalty: The death penalty flies in the face of moral values, common sense, and history. But three people have already been executed in the U.S. this year, and at least nine more executions are scheduled. In this blog, AFSC Liberation Summer Graduate Johanni Valerio, Norman Monthly Meeting Clerk Scott Carmack, and AFSC NY Youth Activism Fellow Akira Rose join AFSC’s Lewis Webb, Jr. in sharing their perspectives on ending the death penalty. AFSC on the Issues podcast: “Climate change, Climate justice, and community resilience": In New Mexico, agricultural communities are working to protect access to land and water. They are growing healthy food. They are stimulating the local economy. And they are building grassroots leadership. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. [link removed]
