Welcome to The Agenda (yeah - THAT agenda), your weekly update on what's happening in the LGBTQ political world. Whatever you do, don’t forward it to Mike Pence. He doesn't need to know what we're planning! Forward it to a friend instead.
Overview: Texas and Boston results still pending, Pete tops the charts in Iowa, and more!
ELECTION NIGHT: RESULTS PENDING
Alejandra St. Guillen, seeking to be the first openly LGBTQ Latinx woman on the Boston City Council, is pursuing a recount. Only FIVE votes separate the candidates – and Alejandra will need to collect signatures from around the city for a recount to occur.
In Texas, it’s official: Eliz Markowitz will face Gary Gates in her runoff for House District 28. Here’s a bit of background on Gates: he’s run for public office seven different times before, and thus far, has lost each time. Will his eighth run be different?
He recently loaned his campaign $445,000. In 2016, he ran for Texas Railroad Commissioner and loaned his campaign over $2,000,000. So not exactly a “people powered campaign”.
Two reasons for the lack of resonance with Texas voters? His constant legal battles with the city of Houston and a record of neglecting his housing tenants. Not exactly leadership material!
Meanwhile Eliz – who’s focused her campaign on meeting her future constituents and mobilizing voters – has officially filed to run again in 2020. Grab the details from Eliz herself here:
GAME CHANGERS
Looking for an in-depth dive into Game Changer Gina Ortiz Jones' race for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District? Look no further – The Texan has you covered.
Game Changer Jon Hoadley is seeking to make Congressional history in Michigan’s 6th District – and take down Fred Upton. He sat down with Eclectablog to give an update on this key 2020 race.
Another profile for you: Game Changer Mondaire Jones was ready to run long before Congresswoman Nita Lowey announced her retirement. Learn about how his career in civic justice has led him to capitalize on this moment.
FEEL THE PETE WAVE
Only 80 days until the Iowa Caucuses! For better or for worse, Iowa is seen as a litmus test for Presidential candidates, and right now, Pete Buttigieg is sitting pretty - he's in first place!!
What explains Pete’s meteoric rise? Perhaps it’s his new plan to better support veterans and their families. Or his other new plan to support people with disabilities and their families. Or maybe it’s his “Medicare for All Who Want It” plan, heralded by The Washington Post as “the most progressive.” Pete’s been releasing a lot of plans!
Or maybe it’s none of the above, or a little bit of everything. Let this Iowa voter convince you.
While not in Iowa, Pete is also barnstorming in New Hampshire. Watch his Veterans Day address from Rochester:
